Analysis Of Kill A Mockingbird Essay -- To Kill a Mockingbird, Famil

Southern Belles embody the eccentric ideals of the South, yet represent the epitome of respectable manners and morals for women nationwide, including most of the women characters in To Kill a Mockingbird. The cornerstone of the idea of a Southern Belle is based on stringent gender, class, and race guidelines, but underneath those divisions are the common attributes of charm, respectability, and intense passion for the well being of others (Oklopcic). True Southern Belles abide by the unwritten rules specific to their population, which include proper etiquette, manners, volunteerism, and grace. Characters such as Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie demonstrate these principles and attempt to instill their good graces and feminine qualities in Scout, who is the opposite of a Southern Belle. Similar to Scout, Mayella is contrary to the Southern Belle persona, but she does not choose to be the reverse of a Southern Belle. Instead, she is forced to by the challenging economic times and her fam ily’s low status on the social hierarchy. The Southern Belle is a woman of impeccable manners and morals, much of which can be contradicted by Scout and Mayella’s mannerisms, but emphasized by the beliefs of Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie (Lynch). The history of Southern Belles rests upon â€Å"a description, a code, a stereotype - which legitimizes and authorizes the interpretation of culture and nature, masculinity and femininity, superiority and inferiority, power and subordination† (Oklopcic). The whole idea revolves around a fear that women might rebel against the traditional system of government, in which the man holds the highest authority. If the dividing lines between superior and inferior people were to be reject... ... middle of paper ... ...y, Miss Maudie Atkinson resembles a Southern Belle with her hospitality and commitment to Jem, Scout, and Dill. In addition, she is optimistic, which is a positive feeling she inflicts on others, and is sensitive to everyone’s feeling, no matter their race. Works Cited Hakala, Laura. Human Resource Management Relations and Rewards Essay

Human Resource Management Relations and Rewards - Essay Example â€Å"Grievances are best dealt with at an early stage, informally, with the immediate line manager. However, organizations should have formal procedures in place to handle cases left unresolved. Having formal grievance procedures in place allows employers to give reasonable consideration to any issues which can't be resolved informally and to deal with them fairly and consistently†. The problems are solved in the grievance hearing meeting. The line manager will hear the complaint of the employee first and then it is taken a open discussion by the group about the issues. Disciplinary cases include poor performance or misconduct by the employee during his work .If an employee’s performance does not meet the set standards, the employer has to improve the performance through informal discussion with the employee. But if the employee continues his poor performance, the employer has to take disciplinary actions against him. Basic useful direction is given in the Acas Code of Practice on Grievance and Discipline issues. It provides a detailed guidance and advice for the employers and employees which will be useful to them in their current and future career. This code is adopted to help the employer and employee to handle the disciplinary and grievance issues in the working environment. â€Å"If the employer decides to a take disciplinary action or dismiss the employee, they should follow the procedures which are laid out in the Acas Code of Practice on disciplinary and grievance procedures†.

Crisis Communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Crisis Communication - Essay Example There were clearly ethical issues involved in the SARS crisis. This had to do with the handling of information, where it was necessary that accurate statistics on the crisis will be made known to the public for further action to be taken. However, this was concealed from the public in most parts of China. In the case of SARS, there could hardly be any form of pre-crisis contingency planning. This is because the cause of the disease was virtually not known and so it was going to be difficult to control its emergence. However, for most other parts of the world, there could be pre-crisis contingency plans to ensure that the disease did not spread to those areas. Examples of these could have been the screening of all people undertaking cross-border journeys. In cases where diseases were detected in people also, using a coherent quarantine system that ensured that there was no mingling of affected people with unaffected people. What is more, at the crisis event level, a rapid response con tingency plan was going to be necessary. This rapid response was supposed to ensure that as many cases of SARS were identified and rapidly responded to. Noting the high level of mortality associated with the disease, this rapid response contingency plan was going to be a way of ensuring that people who contracted the disease were not made to live with the disease for a very long time. Finally, an evaluation contingency plan was necessary at the post-crisis recovery phase to find ways of avoiding future occurrences. Media communication in times such as the SARS crisis is so important in ensuring that the right information was sent to the public. Such information was also necessary for educating the populace so that they would not over worry with events that were taking place. To this end, as a communication expert, one of the best ways to deal with the media is to ensure that there were specialized media reporters to give information to the public on the disease. This would have been done by sampling a section of the media who had some background in medicine or health and giving them professional and specialized information on the disease. Consequently, the public will be made aware that for any official and professional reportage on the disease, they had to look up to these media persons. These specialized media persons would be made to work with all media outlets as resource persons and spokespersons on the disease. They would have also used avenues of the new media such as social networks to give out information on the disease. Case # 3– 1997 Red River Valley Floods The 1997 Red River Valley Flood is a typical case of public environmental crisis that affected a group of people within an identified locality. The 1997 Red River Valley Flood is also a typical natural disaster that hit its victims in a spontaneous manner. Like with all natural disasters, the Red River Valley Flood was one that needed an integrated management strategy to address it at all levels of it including the pre-crisis and crisis phases. With an integrated management strategy, it was going to be possible to bring on board as many experts and professional in the field of flood disaster as control as possible to handle the flood. Most

Discovering Management Thought Leaders - Andrew Kakabadse Essay

Discovering Management Thought Leaders - Andrew Kakabadse - Essay Example ict approach to governance practice, boardroom effectiveness and research work has contributed widely to his success, achievements and excellent reputation. According to Wall Street Journal, in support of the Harvard Business Review, Kakabadse features in the top fifty executive researchers and educators, who specializes in interpersonal skills, particularly on issues related to governance practices, international relations and leadership (Kakabadse, Bank & Vinnicombe 2004). According to Kakabadse, Bank & Vinnicombe (2004), what separate Kakabadse from other instructors, educators or professors are based on priority, interest and the mode with which he disseminate his services, which inherently include teaching, writing and proper research on top teams and boards. In addition, much as other instructors would be over emphasizing on payment before delivering their services to their clients, for instance charging the clients according to duration and amount of service they provide to the clients, Kakabadse would put his results before the payment (Kakabadse & Korac, 1998). This implies that he would not ask for payment if he has not registered a positive impact or result to his clients. Another feature, distinguishing Kakabades from other thinkers, is his peculiar understanding of the issues related to board research and the concept surrounding the international practices and the governance practices. Unlike other educators, Kakabadse view research and international relation not as a brief interaction but rather as a lasting obligation to generate exemplary results to the boards and their team, and to establish how the boards are viewed, including positive feedback, which can be assimilated into his more than 20 global databases. Moreover, Kakabadse, through out his working, has maintained hyperactive and relentlessly positive character, a trait which has made him outsmart other thinkers in the same line of activity (Kakabadse, Bank & Vinnicombe 2004). Relationship between job roles functions Essay Example for Free

Relationship between job roles functions Essay In this coursework I will be analysing the relationship between job roles functions and and organisations structure using appropriate illustrative examples. The aims of Thorpe park is ‘to deliver memorable experience to millions of customers in the safest possible way’ Answer these questions to explain how the following helps Thorpe park achieve its aims. Why is it important that Thorpe Park has separate customer assistants, supervisors and managers? Use 1 area of Thorpe Park e.g. the Food Beverage area to help explain why. Thorpe park has separate customer assistants supervisors and managers because if a customer has a problem with a specific department for example food beverage then the customer assistance from that pacific area can help but if it was to be all together then the business wouldn’t flow steadily in facts everything would be mixed up and customers would be unhappy and Thorpe park would loose customers and money this is why organisation skills are important if everything was mixed the Thorpe park would know what to improve and do.managers has the most authority then comes supervisor then customer assistants and then the managers have control over supervisors and they have control over customer services etc they have different job roles and all of the different job roles help that department run smoothly making sure there aware of their duties and responsibilities and who to go to if theres a problem this is why team work is very important for all small and large business like Thor pe park. Why has Thorpe Park organised its employees into ‘areas’ e.g. Guest Services / Retail / Human Resources / Health Safety etc. What advantages does this give Thorpe Park? Dividing employees into areas gives Thorpe park a advantage because it makes it organised and neat for example if someone has a problem with there tickets they can go to guest services manager this allows Thorpe park to track what they need to improve on as each area they would need to change something in each areas in order to short the problem as this shows the general manager the performance of each area the  weaknesses and the strengths organisational skills and problem solving skills are a good idea. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Thorpe Park having a tall organisational structure? Are there any disadvantages? The advantage of thorpe park having a tall organisational structure is because the general manager of Thorpe park is responsible for less employees as there is managers for each area such as health and safety manager, finance manager, human resources manager etc.the general manager is only responsible for area managers the fewer people at the top who manager people below them and at the lower levers there are more employees and fewer managers the function of each layer will be clear and distinc there will clear lines of control and responsibilitys and each employee can be closly supervised.however the disadvantages of Thorpe park having a tall organisational structure are that there are a lot of manager levels than a flat chart who have fewer manager levels having a tall structure means slower decision making for example the product enginer at a small business can talk to the owner straight away however in a larger business cannot respond quickly beacause several management layers coul d be involved in the decision making tall structures usually mean higher costs for different management layers meaning a lot of money is being spent of a large business like Thorpe park in order to have all these different areas in Thorpe park.another disadvantage is that communication is a problem as if has to go through many layers before reaching a final outcome. Explain how having separate job roles, business ‘areas’ a well organised employee structure help Thorpe Park achieve their aim to ‘deliver memorable experiences to millions of customers in the safest way’. Having separate job roles business areas and a well organised employee structure helps Thorpe park achieve their aim as it will make the business it sell organised having seperat job roles keeps the employees in categories and aware of what their duties and responsibilities are and also they can be clearly supervised and made sure they are achieving what they want and working hard.having a well organised employees structure keeps the employees focused on one thing instead of more things meaning the better the job will get done as responsibility gets shared out.
